Reds confirm Fellaini signing

Reds confirm Fellaini signing

Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton for an undisclosed fee.

Marouane, 25, from Etterbeek, Belgium, joined Everton in 2008 and has made 163 starts and 10 substitute appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 32 goals. A full Belgium international, he has 42 caps and seven goals since his international debut in 2007.

Manchester United manager David Moyes said: “I have worked with Marouane for five years and I’m delighted he has decided to join Manchester United. He is a player with great ability and strength and I think he will make a real difference to our squad.”

Marouane Fellaini said: “I am thrilled to sign for Manchester United. I have known the manager for many years now and I have a lot of respect for his way of working. When I was given the opportunity to work with him again, I jumped at the chance. I had a fantastic time at Everton and I’d like to thank all the fans and staff there for everything they have done for me. But being a Manchester United player is something that every player dreams of and I believe that I can make a real contribution to the team’s efforts to win trophies in the future."

Arsenal are close to sealing the club-record signing of Mesut Ozil.

Real Madrid's attacking midfielder has completed part of his medical and is expected to be announced as an Arsenal player before the transfer window closes at 11pm.

Real will receive £42.5m for the 24-year-old if the deal goes through - almost three times the reported amount Arsenal paid Zenit St Petersburg for their current record signing, Andrey Arshavin.

And Germany international Ozil, who joined Real in 2010 from Werder Bremen for 15m euros, is set to become the first through the Bernabeu exit door following the world record-breaking arrival of Gareth Bale from Tottenham.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said in the aftermath of Sunday's 1-0 victory over Spurs: "It is a little bit like a domino game. Maybe something will happen in the last 24 hours, maybe not. It is very difficult to predict, but maybe we can surprise you."

Ozil may not be the only high-profle player arriving at The Emirates before the 11pm deadline - an interest has been registered in Chelsea striker Demba Ba.

Arsenal are understood to have offered a £1.5m loan fee for Ba, while Chelsea want double that amount and are happy to keep the player if a move does not materialise.

Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, meanwhile, has joined on an initial season-long loan as cover for Wojciech Szczesny.

Arsenal will then have an option to buy the Italy international next summer.

Moyes coy on transfers

Soccer To Day - David Moyes is keeping his cards close to his chest as the end of the transfer window approaches.

The champions are being linked with a whole host of players with many pundits expecting a busy final day on Monday for a number of clubs.

The United manager was pleased with the performance, if not the result, at Liverpool but claims he is not in a position to say whether a new signing will arrive at Old Trafford in time.

"We'll continue working for what is left of it [the window]," he explained. "And try and get what we can in but you can see why they [the players] are champions as I was really impressed by them today.

"There's not too long to wait [before the deadline]. Maybe there's a chance [of something happening] but I couldn't give you a heads up one way or another at the moment.

"There's a few things going on but we will know soon. I don't know how long there is to go, not long, and we'll see but, as I've said, I'm really pleased as the players have given me a lot of confidence."

Sergio Aguero helped Manchester City to a 4-0 win over Newcastle

Sergio Aguero helped Manchester City to a 4-0 win over Newcastle, informastion football, soccer to day

Manuel Pellegrini made the best possible start to his reign as Manchester City manager as the Blues cruised to the Premier League summit by hammering four past 10-man Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium.

Having seen title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea both claim convincing wins during the Premier League opening weekend, all eyes were on the Etihad to see whether the 2011/12 champions could deliver in a similar manner.

David Silva took just six minutes to open City's account with a close-range header.

Sergio Aguero added another before half-time, with Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri also on target after the interval, while Edin Dzeko was desperately unlucky not to open his account for the season too.

It was not entirely a trouble-free night for Pellegrini as he lost skipper Vincent Kompany to a groin injury.

Yet, compared to opposite number Alan Pardew, the Chilean's problems are minuscule.

Pardew was clearly furious that a bid from Arsenal for Yohan Cabaye was made public in the hours before kick-off, which effectively prevented the midfielder from being involved.

And when he sees the television replays, the Magpies chief should be equally annoyed with Steven Taylor.

Newcastle's problems were not helped when, inexplicably, Taylor deliberately caught Aguero round the side of his head with a swing of his arm, right in front of referee Andre Marriner.

It was an obvious straight red card and, considering the visitors were already two goals down, left them with no chance of salvaging anything from a sorry evening.

Their own hopes were hampered by the bid for Cabaye which triggered the Frenchman's return to the north-east because he was not in the right frame of mind to play.

And, when Taylor turned Dzeko's near-post cross into the path of Silva, the little Spain star nodded home from close range.

City's second came straight down the middle of the pitch.

Skipper Kompany put the visitors' defence on the back foot with an incisive pass to Dzeko, who caught Newcastle by surprise by flicking the ball straight on to Aguero.

His quick thinking allowed him to get half a yard in front of Taylor, which was all the room he needed to bury a precise shot into the bottom corner.

Amid a flurry of yellow cards Cheick Tiote brought a rare save out of Joe Hart with a long-range effort before Dzeko headed Aguero's cross wide at the other end.

Within five minutes of the restart it had got worse for Newcastle.

nitially it appeared Newcastle had been reprieved thanks to a brilliant save from Tim Krul to deny Dzeko.

The hosts maintained their pressure, though. And after Debuchy had fouled Aguero on the edge of the area, Toure curled a superb free-kick into the top corner.

Silva went close from a pass by Fernandinho, who was outstanding on his debut, then Dzeko was denied by Krul again.

Nasri's introduction in place of Aguero on the hour underlined the offensive strength Pellegrini has at his disposal, with Stevan Jovetic not even making the bench due to a minor knock.

At the back it is a different matter, though.

Kompany's exit will certainly be a concern given Matija Nastasic's absence and Kolo Toure's exit for Liverpool, which meant Javi Garcia was forced to fill in alongside Joleon Lescott tonight.

Not that it made any difference to the outcome as Nasri evaded the attentions of Debuchy to slot home City's fourth.

Dzeko went close again before Alvaro Negredo was handed his debut, the former Sevilla man having a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside in the dying stages.

Jose Mourinho marks Chelsea return with a 2-0 win over Hull City

Jose Mourinho marks Chelsea return with a 2-0 win over Hull City

Jose Mourinho marked his return as Chelsea manager with a 2-0 win over Premier League new boys Hull City at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho's side were gifted an early chance to get their season off to the perfect start when referee Jonathan Moss pointed to the spot following Hull goalkeeper Alan McGregor's collision with Fernando Torres. However, the Scottish international was able to redeem himself, pulling off a fine save to deny Frank Lampard from 12 yards.

The hosts controlled the opening stages of the game, with their pressure paying off on the 12 minute mark when Brazil midfielder Oscar poked the ball under McGregor after being played in by Kevin de Bruyne.

Lampard atoned for his spot-kick miss to double Chelsea's lead with a long-range free-kick midway through the first-half as the Blues threatened to run riot. He was then unlucky not to make it three just before the break when McGregor denied him with a smart save before Branislav Ivanovic was also thwarted by the Scotsman who palmed away his powerful header.

As the hour mark approached, Hull boss Steve Bruce introduced new signings Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore who both arrived from Tottenham earlier this week. The Tigers put in a spirited display after the interval and they came closest to pulling one back when Petr Cech caught Curtis Davies' goal-bound header.

Despite Hull's resilience as the game drew on, chances for either side were few and far between as Mourinho enjoyed a winning start to his second spell in the hot seat at Stamford Bridge.

Belgium forward de Bruyne has been a Chelsea player since January 2012 and finally made his competitive debut behind Torres, who was preferred up front to Romelu Lukaku.

McGregor saved from Eden Hazard before felling Torres with a clumsy challenge which conceded a penalty.

Lampard saw his spot-kick saved, but it appeared only a matter of time before the visiting defence was breached.

Hazard received the ball on the left, cut inside and found De Bruyne, who fed the on-running Oscar and the Brazilian prodded underneath the advancing McGregor.

Bruce - Chelsea a constant threatHull City manager Steve Bruce gives his thoughts after the newly-promoted team were beaten by Chelsea.
The Scot again denied Lampard, this time from the edge of the area, as Chelsea pressed forward relentlessly in search of a second.

It came after Torres was awarded a dubious free-kick 30 yards out, against James Chester.

Lampard's rapier-like strike dipped into the top corner past McGregor and Chelsea's record goalscorer wheeled away, racing towards the dugout and his manager.

Mourinho turned his back, though, focusing on what would happen next and leaving Lampard to celebrate with his team-mates.

Hull will have less difficult days than this in the top flight, but they did little to help themselves, giving possession away cheaply.

Lampard had another shot saved as half-time approached and, from a corner, Ivanovic had a header blocked on the line by McGregor.

There was no reaction from referee Moss, whose watch did not buzz - it would alert him if the ball had crossed the line - and Hull were relieved to be only two down.

Kevin de Bruyne give their thoughts after their home win against Chelsea.
Chelsea were content to bide their time in the opening exchanges of the second period and home goalkeeper Petr Cech was required to make a save for the first time when Robert Koren shot straight at him.

The Tigers were fortunate not to concede a second penalty when Ivanovic was pushed over by Robbie Brady before Hull appealed in vain for handball when Yannick Sagbo's shot was driven at Lampard's chest.

The arrivals of Huddlestone and Livermore gave Hull more of a midfield presence and Cech was forced into another save when Ahmed El Mohamady's right-wing cross found Curtis Davies, whose header extended the goalkeeper.

Andre Schurrle and Lukaku replaced De Bruyne and Torres as Mourinho sought a fresh impetus which never came.

Schurrle chipped over when played through by Ramires but Mourinho had to be content with a 2-0 victory.

Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck star as Manchester United crush Swansea 4-1

Robin van Persie, welbeck, manchester united vs swansea, information football, soccer to day

Manchester United got their title defence off to a perfect start as David Moyes' first Premier League game in charge ended in a 4-1 victory away to Swansea City.

Robin van Persie provided an exhibition of superb finishing with two goals and Danny Welbeck also netted a brace in an emphatic away win, while Wilfried Bony scored for Swansea.

The crucial spell came towards the end of the first half as Van Persie fired home an acrobatic opener in the 34th minute and Welbeck added a second two minutes later to put United in control at the interval.

Van Persie made it 3-0 with a spectacular strike from distance in the 72nd minute, before Swansea's club-record signing Bony pulled one goal back eight minutes from time.

United were not finished, though, and Wayne Rooney played his part after coming on as a substitute by playing in Welbeck for an exquisite chipped finish.

The confidence of winning five championships in the past seven seasons was in evidence throughout the first half as United soaked up pressure, then struck with deadly efficiency.

Swansea had already escaped from a couple of defensive lapses, as Ryan Giggs elected to try and find Welbeck when it seemed more obvious to go for goal himself, before Michel Vorm turned over Phil Jones' volley.

Even Van Persie had failed to take a decent opportunity. But when the Dutchman evaded the attentions of the home defence and was allowed to drift into space behind the centre-halves because Angel Rangel was playing him onside, there was only ever likely to be one outcome.

And Van Persie showed the class that made him a back-to-back Golden Boot winner, hooking a shot into the corner to make him the first United player to score a league goal for someone other than Ferguson since Peter Davenport.

Welbeck found the net just once in domestic combat last term, but within a minute of Van Persie's effort, he had matched that figure.

Again Swansea were architects of their own downfall as Ben Davies got sucked into a central position attempting to clear a Patrice Evra cross. That allowed Antonio Valencia to return the ball to the edge of the six-yard area, where Welbeck turned it home.

It was no surprise Swans manager Michael Laudrup sent a call out for £12million record signing Bony at the break though, the striker having missed out on a starting berth due to midweek international duties in the United States.

Rooney was introduced for Giggs shortly afterwards, a move well received by the visiting contingent, who bellowed the striker's name in their usual manner, with no hint of annoyance.

And Rooney claimed an assist for Van Persie's second, finding his strike partner with a short pass.

Williams paid the price for standing off on the edge of his own box and after Van Persie stepped round Chico Flores he applied a brutal finish from 20 yards that flew into the top corner.

Bony netted a consolation for Swansea after good work by Pablo Hernandez but the contest itself was already over, and Welbeck eclipsed last season's meagre tally in stoppage time with a wonderful chipped finish.

Rickie Lambert heads England to 3-2 win over Scotland

Rickie Lambert heads England to 3-2 win over Scotland, information football, soccer to day

Rickie Lambert came off the bench and scored with his first touch to give England a 3-2 friendly win over Scotland.

The Southampton striker thumped home a 70th-minute header from Leighton Baines' corner to put England in front for the first and only time at Wembley.

James Morrison had fired Scotland into an early lead with Theo Walcott equalising before the break, while a fine early second-half strike from Kenny Miller was cancelled out by Danny Welbeck before Lambert's dramatic introduction.

Roy Hodgson handed a start to unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and and although he sent a shot across the face of goal early on, it was Scotland who took the lead on 11 minutes.

Welbeck headed a corner away but Walcott could only clear the ball on as far as Morrison. The West Brom man's 20-yard shot was fumbled by Joe Hart, who was slow to react.

The equaliser came just before the half-hour mark when an excellent defence-splitting pass from Cleverley down the right channel freed Walcott. The Arsenal forward cut inside Steven Whittaker and finished from five yards.

Frank Lampard replaced Jack Wilshere at the start of the second half but it was Scotland who were soon back in front.

Alan Hutton's cross from the right was chested down by Miller, who sidestepped Gary Cahill and blasted a powerful shot thatflew past Hart.

However England were level again within four minutes when Welbeck headed Steven Gerrard's free-kick into the bottom corner of McGregor's net.

Rooney made way for Lambert midway through the second half and with his first touch, the Saints ace put his country in front.

He met Baines' 70th-minute corner with a thumping header that gave McGregor no chance.

Lambert also hit the post in stoppage time as England held on to claim a narrow win over the Auld Enemy.

Roberto Soldado completes move to Tottenham from Valencia

Roberto Soldado completes move to Tottenham from Valencia, soccer to day, informastion football

Tottenham have completed the signing of Roberto Soldado from Valencia after the striker passed a medical at White Hart Lane.

Soldado has become Tottenham's most expensive player, arriving from Spain for around £26m.

The Spain international is expected to make his debut against familiar opposition, when Spurs host Espanyol on 10 August.

A statement from Tottenham read: "We're delighted to confirm the signing of Roberto Soldado from Valencia after successfully completing his medical."

Soldado began his career at Real Madrid, but three years ago he moved back to his hometown club, where he scored 30 goals in 46 games last season.

The capture of Soldado means Spurs have broken their transfer record twice in four weeks, with Paulinho's £17m arrival in July eclipsing the £16m fee the club paid for Luka Modric in 2008.

Marquez reviews first half of 2013

Marc Marquez has surprised many both inside and outside of the MotoGP™ paddock in 2013, having won three of his first nine races and finished off the premier class podium on only one occasion thus far. The Repsol Honda Team rider and current championship leader reviewed Part 1 of the season ahead of his summer break.

Which race have you liked best this season?

There are several, but Austin was special - the first victory for me. I also liked Laguna Seca. It was a new track for me, which I had not ever ridden at, and it’s a special circuit. I also loved the Jerez race because I pushed 100%. There are several races in which I could have done better, some worse, but overall I'm happy except for Mugello, which was a weekend of crashes and a fall in the race with just two laps remaining - and I lost some valuable points.

How did it feel to win a MotoGP race?

After the Austin test I saw that there could be a good opportunity to get the first win, but you always have your doubts - because a test is not like a Grand Prix weekend. In the race things are completely different. When I won the race, at first it felt like just another victory. But when I got home, I felt that a win in MotoGP is not just any victory, it is something special and I was thrilled. I remembered all the people who had helped me achieve it.

Do you think it is normal to win in only your second race?

No, but a lot depends on the circumstances. By winning, it means that we did something right. The Austin circuit suited me right from the start, but maybe if this Grand Prix had been held at the end of the championship, the victory would have come at the end of the season - you never know. It was a new track for everyone and it helped me a lot to have done the test there. When I jumped from 125 to Moto2 I suffered even a little more than what I have when moving up to MotoGP.

They say that 125cc and 250cc were the best preparation for MotoGP. What did you learn from your experience in Moto2?

The truth is that I cannot compare 250 with Moto2, because I never raced in 250. But maybe when I jumped from 125 to Moto2 I suffered slightly more than when moving up to MotoGP. The move from Moto2 to MotoGP is not as big as from 250, because I had ridden with a four-stroke engine in Moto2 and the weight of the bike is similar to a MotoGP machine. With the electronics you have to adapt a lot, but the rest is pretty similar. Also, the tyre profile is quite similar. There are positives and, probably, some negatives. In Moto2 I learned many things. In 125 it is different because you can go all-out from start to finish, but in Moto2 you need to learn to manage tyres, and adapt to a full or empty tank, which is an aspect that you almost do not notice with the smaller bikes. It is also a closely fought category where you and your team make the difference. We learned many things and all this experience helps us in MotoGP now.

Was it more fun than MotoGP?

It depends on the race. I enjoy riding in MotoGP most, because in Moto2 there was always chatter or something, and the bike was never going perfect. We were all equal and the difference had to be made by the rider. MotoGP is the most enjoyable class, but perhaps the most fun races were in Moto2. Now, at each circuit I still suffer some chatter, but compared to Moto2 it is almost nothing.

How do you overtake with such heavy bikes?

In MotoGP overtaking is tough, because the bike weighs a lot and you have to be very confident when you pass. Especially when braking, because with carbon discs it is right at the last second. The tyre also allows you to brake very hard, so we see little overtaking. We also go very fast and you need to have your passes planned, although when a rival is in reach you can adapt your plan a little more.

Marc Marquez will be World Champion in 2013 if...

...if he’s lucky! I do not want to think about it because, as we have seen at the last two races, anything can happen in a championship. There is still half of the season left and these last two races have gone pretty well, but we have to see things in real conditions, with (Dani) Pedrosa and (Jorge) Lorenzo fully recovered. Meanwhile, we are getting these results and, as we are right up there, there's chance.

All the races you've finished, you’ve placed on the podium. How do you explain that?

That is a big surprise and good news. Except for Mugello, in every race I have finished on the podium. Consistency also counts for a lot. Perhaps this is more impressive than the wins. But the reality of fighting for the podium in every race is good news.

What is it like to compete with Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi?

You learn a lot. They are riders who never throw in the towel, as we have seen. You learn a lot riding behind them and alongside them, seeing how they tackle the races, seeing their strategies —also a very important aspect. You pick up little things and then try to use them.

How is your brother doing this season?

He is surprising everyone. This winter I saw him looking very strong when doing motocross. I was convinced he was fast. I had to push in order to stay ahead of him. Preseason training at home has paid off. We strive to achieve the maximum together and that helps us to remain in good shape, because even by training together we help each other.

Does he ever beat you in training?

The three-year age gap makes a difference, but the truth is that he is going very fast. I can still hold up against him. But there will be a time in which I can no longer be so sure, because I was not as physically strong as him at his age.

What are your ideal vacations? Do you already have plans for this summer?

There are some plans. Beach, sun and friends. I won’t have much of a break, but during a short week I will disconnect and then continue training.
